Glory Road - Some Quotes

GLORY ROAD - My Story of the 1966 NCAA Basketball Championship and How One Team Triumphed Against the Odds and Changed America Forever (by Coach Don Haskins with Dan Wetzel) is the story of a coach who in the 1960s, when America was divided between whites and blacks, defied the odds and dared to start five of his best players who all happen to be black, and went on to win the 1966 NCAA Basketball Championship - A first in American basketball history.

All quotes below are from Coach Don Haskins.

"Players are players, doesn't matter if it's a girl or a boy, a great player thrives on being pushed hard."

"I just could not accept anything less than complete and total effort. No matter what the score was. I could not separate effort from the final result. To me the score wasn't as important as the way we played the game."

"Let me tell players and young coaches what I think is the most important thing about basketball. Don't ever play not to lose. You see it from teams all the time. They are just trying to run out the clock, not lose rather than trying to win. Nothing will cause you to lose quicker than playing scared, being afraid to make a mistake. Just play. If something happens, it happens. When you get to playing not to lose, you are in trouble. Never play scared and always play hard and together, you are going to have a chance to win."

SUPERWOMOM'S NOTES:
Also of the same title, the story of Coach Haskins was made into a film by Disney starring Josh Lucas and directed by James Gartner. The accompanying photo for this article was from Amazon.
